Our History
Superior was founded in 1964 by a Warren, PA entrepreneur named
Elwood Fry. Mr. Fry had founded or co-founded several other businesses
including Warren Concrete Products prior to Superior Tire &
Rubber Corp. The early sales efforts of the business were focused
on retail car tire sales, recapping of tires and compression molding
rubber press-on tires.
In 1974 Henri LeMeur Sr. purchased the company in a leveraged buy
out. Sales were $940,000 during his first year. Superior manufacturing
and marketing was focused on rubber solid industrial tires at this
time. By 1980, Superior entered the polyurethane tire and load wheel
markets. On the rubber side, Superior focused on niche markets such
as the floor maintenance market and the rubber track shoe market.
Sales were $2,300,000 in 1980. Superior focused on improving its
market share in polyurethane industrial tires and consolidating
its gains in niche rubber industrial markets during the 1980s. In
order to service the polyurethane load wheel market, Superior made
its first investment in CNC machine tools. This investment would
grow to 20 networked CNC machine tools as well as several programmable
welders today. In addition, Superior began supplying the US military
with tires during this period. Superior’s quality system in
place today is a derivative of the MIL-I-45208A put in place at
that time.
In 1990s Superior began to expand its product offering into additional
markets which include the chopper cots, snow plow blades, mining
components, complex tire and wheel assemblies as well as several
other custom molded products. Beginning in 2000, Superior expanded
its tire and wheel offerings to include undercarriage subsystems
such as bogie rocker assemblies, drive wheels for tracked units
and idler subassemblies.
By 2005, sales had grown to $22,000,000 and employment to 170.
